KB01274 - Error "Service fails to start, generating error 1068" appears when starting BlackBerry Enterprise Server
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software versions 2.1 through 4.1
- Microsoft® Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, and Exchange 2003
- Microsoft Windows® NT®, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003
Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Microsoft Windows operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
Overview
The following error is displayed when starting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server:
Service failed to start, generating error 1068
Cause
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server is configured to depend on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store, but the Microsoft Exchange Information Store is not installed.
Resolution
Complete the following steps:
- Open the Registry Editor by clicking Start > Run. Type regedit and click OK.
- Depending on the version of your BlackBerry Enterprise Server, go to one of the following locations: BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 2.1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\BlackBerry Service
BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 3.5 through 3.6 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\BlackBerry Server\
BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0 through 4.1 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\BlackBerry Dispatcher
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\BlackBerry Policy Service
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\BlackBerry SyncServer
- Double-click DependOnService.
- In the Data field, delete MSExchangeIS from the entry.
- Repeat the above procedure for the following registry entries, if they are present:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services
- For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0 and 4.1, restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Important: Restarting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 2.1 through 3.6, if the problem is not resolved, complete these steps:
- In Windows Administrative Tools, double-click Services.
- For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 2.1, right-click BlackBerry Enterprise Server Service. For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 3.5 through 3.6, right-click BlackBerry Server .
- From the Startup type drop-down list, select Manual.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
- Double-click Net Logon Service.
- From the Startup type drop-down list, select Automatic.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
- Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
- Depending on your version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, in Services, start the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Service or the BlackBerry Server Service.
- Start all services on the Microsoft Exchange Server where the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration mailbox is located.
For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 2.1 through 3.6, if the problem is still not resolved, complete the following steps:
- From a command prompt, go to C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server
- Type BlackBerryServer -remove and press ENTER.
- Type BlackBerryServer -install -login=\ -password= -auto and press ENTER.
- Close the command prompt.
