Default KB17026 - Unable to sign into Microsoft LCS 2005 from ...

KB17026 - Unable to sign into Microsoft Live Communications Server 2005 from a BlackBerry Storm smartphone using TCP/TLS as the transport protocol

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server
  • BlackBerry® Storm™ Series
  • BlackBerry® Client for use with Microsoft® Office Live Communications Server 2005
  • Microsoft® Office Live Communications Server 2005

Overview

When trying to login to the BlackBerry Client for use with Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 using TCP/TLS on a BlackBerry Storm smartphone, the device never connects and displays “Connecting” indefinitely. The BBIM log also displays the following error:
<2008-12-01 11:41:18.227 EST>:[171]:::

Cause

Version 2.2 of the BlackBerry Client for use with Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 for BlackBerry Storm smartphones does not support TCP/TLS as a transport protocol as it is being phased out. The last version of the BlackBerry Client for use with Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 to support TCP/TLS is 1.1.23, which is incompatible with BlackBerry Storm smartphones. The only workaround is to reconfigure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to use HTTP/HTTPS as the transport protocol.

Resolution

Reconfigure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server collaboration service to use HTTP/HTTPS as the transport protocol
  1. Configure Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 to enable Microsoft® Office Communicator Web Access.

For more information, please see the Office Communicator Web Access Planning and Deployment Guide by going to Microsoft Download Center and searching for CommunicatorWebAccess_PlanningDeployment.doc.
  2. Reinstall the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and select Microsoft Live Communications Server\Microsoft Office Communicator as the instant messaging connector.

For more information, please see the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange - Installation Guide by going to http://na.blackberry.com/eng/deliver..._427146_11.pdf.
  3. Configure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to connect to Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 via HTTP/HTTPS.

For more information, please see KB13530: Set up the BlackBerry Collaboration Service.
  4. Replace the BlackBerry Client for use with Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 with a version that supports HTTP/HTTPS.

For the most current versions, please see the BlackBerry Enterprise Instant Messaging Client and Server Compatibility Matrix.
For assistance wirelessly deploying the updated client, please see KB15690: How to deploy instant messaging for Microsoft Live Communication Server.

this has screwed us over. we are finlly implementing cwa next week in preparation for 5.0 since it completely removes support for tls.

in the mean time, instead of reinstalling bes on all 18 servers (cuz thats dumb on rims part in itself), im going to install a standalone bes just for collab and point them all to that.

the interesting thing to note is that for fresh installs (in 4.1), it only allows you to install lcs/windows or lcs/cwa, not both. however if you then rerun the installer, it then gives you the "hybrid" option to configure both for use.
