KB11485 - Unable to use a BlackBerry smartphone as a tethered modem
Environment
- BlackBerry® Desktop Software versions 4.1 to 5.0
- BlackBerry smartphones
- Microsoft® Windows
Overview
When a BlackBerry smartphone user tries to connect to the Internet on a computer that is using the BlackBerry smartphone as a tethered modem, the following error message is displayed:
Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device)
Cause
This issue may be caused by one of the following:
- The modem is turned off or malfunctioning.
- The handshaking options for the modem are incorrectly configured.
- The modem is unsupported.
Resolution
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and make sure that the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager is turned on and able to detect the BlackBerry smartphone.
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Phone and Modem options.
- In the Phone and Modem Options window, click the Modems tab.
- Select Standard Modem and click Properties.
- In the Standard Modem Properties window, click the Diagnostics tab.
- Under the Modem Information section, click Query Modem.
- If the results are all positive, the BlackBerry smartphone is functioning correctly.
Note: If you are still unable to connect to the Internet, contact your wireless service provider.
