KB19371 - BlackBerry smartphones with content protection and memory cleaner ...
KB19371 - BlackBerry smartphones with content protection and memory cleaner turned on might experience performance issues
Environment
- BlackBerry® smartphones
- Content Protection, including garbage collection and memory cleaning
Overview
When the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server administrator or a BlackBerry smartphone user turns on content protection on the BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry smartphone uses content protection to encrypt user data items.
When a BlackBerry smartphone user or BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrator turns on content protection, the BlackBerry smartphone automatically turns on the memory cleaner function, and the secure garbage collection process of the memory cleaner.
If secure garbage collection is turned on, the BlackBerry smartphone overwrites the memory reclaimed by the standard garbage collection process with zeroes, and overwrites the memory freed by the memory cleaner application when it runs. The interaction between the memory cleaner processes and the content protection processes when secure garbage collection is turned on can be processor intensive, and might result in performance issues on the BlackBerry smartphone (in other words, some processes on the BlackBerry smartphone may be slower).
Additional Information
The BlackBerry smartphone performance might be improved by changing the memory cleaner Idle Timeout value. This will decrease the frequency the processes of the memory cleaner are run. Complete the following steps to change the Idle Timeout value:
- On the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options > Security Options> Memory Cleaning.
- In the Idle Timeout field, click 30 Min or higher.
