Default KB03848 - Configure the Duress Notification Policy

KB03848 - Configure the Duress Notification Policy

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Device Software 4.0 to 4.7.1
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0 for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.0 to 4.1 for Novell® GroupWise®
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 5.0 for IBM® Lotus® Domino®
  • BlackBerry® smartphone

Overview

Using the duress password
This rule specifies the email address that is notified when users type their BlackBerry smartphone password under duress. Users can indicate that they are unlocking their BlackBerry smartphone against their will by moving the first character of the password to the end. For example, if a BlackBerry smartphone user's password is blackberry, the duress password will be lackberryb.
If you configure this rule, the maximum number of password attempts is reduced by half. Each time a user types a password to unlock a BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry smartphone must confirm whether the password is either the correct password or the duress password.
Either way, the BlackBerry smartphone will unlock as normal without any indication that the normal password or the duress password was entered. If the duress password sequence was entered, then an email message will be sent to the Duress Notification Address specified in the Password Policy group. As a safety feature, the BlackBerry smartphone will not save a copy of the email message in the Sent Items folder on the BlackBerry smartphone, nor does it show the network communication arrows when sending.
NOTE: Train users to use the duress password feature correctly. The email address that you specify should be active and you should not configure an Out-of-Office reply for it. This will prevent the affected BlackBerry smartphone from receiving a response to the duress notification sent from the device.
The email message arrives at the specified address in the following format:
From: [mailto:@.com]
Sent:
To:
Subject: Unlocked
Body:
Name:
Email:
PIN:
Time:
