KB02516 - How to manually switch wireless networks on a BlackBerry smartphone
Environment
- BlackBerry smartphone
- BlackBerry Device Software version 3.6 - 4.7
Overview
If the Network Selection Mode field is set to Automatic, the BlackBerry smartphone automatically connects to another wireless network when you travel outside your wireless network coverage area. The BlackBerry smartphone can be set to manually search wireless networks and then configured to connect to them.
Note: The SIM card in the BlackBerry smartphone must be provisioned for roaming services before it can connect to a different wireless network. Login information might be required before accessing the wireless network. Contact your service provider for additional details about roaming.
Resolution
To manually select a different wireless network on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the procedure associated with the software version you have installed.
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 - 4.7
- On the Home screen, click Options > Mobile Network.
- Set the Network Selection Mode field to Manual.
- Click Scan for Available Networks. A list of available networks appears.
- In the network list, click a network.
- Click Select Network. The network is selected.
Note: If the Network Mode option is available the BlackBerry smartphone can be configured to look for:
- 3G coverage only
- 2G coverage only
- 3G and 2G coverage (Preference given to 3G coverage) (default selection)
BlackBerry Device Software 4.0 to 4.1
- On the Home screen, click Options > Network.
- Set the Selection Mode field to Manual. Note: If the Select Mode field is not present on the BlackBerry device, contact your service provider as roaming services may not be enabled.
- Click Scan for Available Networks. A list of available networks appears.
- In the network list, click a network.
- Click Select Network. The network is selected.
BlackBerry Device Software 3.6 to 3.7
- On the Home screen, click Options > Network.
- Set the Scan Mode field to Manual.
- Click the trackwheel and select Scan for Networks. A list of available networks appears.
- In the network list, click a network.
- Click Select Network. The network is selected.
