KB05174 - LDAP address lookup
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.0 and 4.1 for Microsoft® Exchange
Overview
This article contains information about using Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for address lookup functionality on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Using LDAP for address lookup instead of using MAPI
By default, when BlackBerry Enterprise Server performance suggests that the load on the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) subsystem should be decreased, LDAP can be used to do address lookup functions. LDAP can be configured on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. However, LDAP is designed to retrieve directory information while the MAPI is doing an address lookup with its own application programming interface (API), as a peripheral step for completing one of its functions. While either of them can be used, LDAP can be chosen to alleviate some of the load placed upon the MAPI subsystem. See article KB15951 for information on the benefits and disadvantages of configuring LDAP on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Using LDAP for address lookup and impact on the network environment
Using LDAP for address lookup initiates a similar amount of traffic as when using a MAPI, although the actual traffic will differ in composition and would be subject to all of the procedures that LDAP uses to complete tasks. Additional configuration is required to compensate for certain configurations (for example, if customers need to use a custom port or search a specific domain). See article KB03193 for information on configuring LDAP on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Using LDAP for address lookup during messaging and calendar operations
There are multiple operations that require user information queries for both messaging and calendar operations. When the BlackBerry Enterprise Server needs to look up information regarding a user during messaging and calendar processes, LDAP is used instead of MAPI.
