Default KB15180 - Unable to activate a BlackBerry smartphone with person document encrypted

KB15180 - Unable to activate a BlackBerry smartphone when the BlackBerry smartphone user's person document is set to encrypt messages before they reach the mailfile

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.0 and later for IBM® Lotus® Domino®
  • IBM® Lotus® Domino®
  • BlackBerry smartphone
  • SDR192128

Overview

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server is unable to activate a BlackBerry smartphone if the BlackBerry smartphone user's person document has the following setting:
When receiving unencrypted mail, encrypt before storing in your mailfile: Yes
The BlackBerry Messaging Agent (MAGT) log file will show the following errors during processing:
[40000] (02/15 13:55:59.477):{0x398C} {Katie Krul/RIM} CN=Server/O=Domain!!mail\kkrul.nsf, fetching modified documents since 02/15/2008 01:55:53 PM

[10478] (02/15 13:55:59.587):{0x398C} Unable to extract attachment ETP.DAT

[20198] (02/15 13:55:59.587):{0x398C} {Katie Krul/RIM} Cannot decode NID=AFA for user Katie Krul/RIM

[40393] (02/15 13:55:59.587):{0x398C} {Katie Krul/RIM} NID=AFA deleted from the mail file by sender request for user Katie Krul/RIM on server Server/Domain

In the above example, NID=AFA represents the NoteID (NID) of the Email Transfer Protocol (ETP) message deposited in the mailfile.

Cause

In order to decrypt messages with Notes Native Encryption, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server requires access to the BlackBerry smartphone user's .ID file, and the .ID file password. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server does not have access to such files and is therefore unable to decrypt the message.

Resolution

Prior to submitting an activation request, turn off the encryption of plain text messages when storing email messages in the BlackBerry smartphone user's mail file by completing the following steps:
  1. In IBM® Lotus Notes®, go to File > Security > User > Security.
  2. Type your Lotus Notes password, and click OK.
  3. Click Mail and clear the checkbox When receiving unencrypted mail, encrypt before storing in your mail file.
  4. Click OK.
Once the activation has completed, the setting can be returned to it's previous state.
