KB14443 - Set up an IP address for Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry smartphones when DNS issues prevent direct BlackBerry Enterprise Server connectivity
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 and 4.1
- Wi-Fi® enabled BlackBerry smartphones
Overview
When a Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry smartphone makes a direct connection to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, it is using the Domain Name System (DNS) entry of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or the BlackBerry Router to establish connectivity.
If the Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry smartphone cannot resolve the DNS entry of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or the BlackBerry Router, configure a static Internet Protocol (IP) address for the BlackBerry smartphone to establish connectivity. By default, the BlackBerry smartphone is not populated with the IP address of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Microsoft® Windows® operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
To establish connectivity, complete the following steps:
- Configure a static IP address for the BlackBerry smartphone:
-
- Open the Registry Editor, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerryRouter\
- Right-click BlackBerryRouter.
- Choose New > Key.
- Name the key Hostname.
- When the key is created, highlight Hostname.
- On the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor, select New > String Value.
- Type Host1.
- Double-click Host1.
- In the Value field, type the IP address of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Note: If the IP address of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server changes, the registry key value field must be updated. The service books on the BlackBerry smartphone must be updated to reflect the new IP address.
- The Registry entry should look like the following:

- Restart the BlackBerry Router service. Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
- Update the service books on the BlackBerry smartphone by completing one of the following:
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This pushes the updated service books.
- If the BlackBerry smartphone has a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card, turn on Mobile Network from Manage Connections on the BlackBerry smartphone. From the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, in BlackBerry Manager, resend the service books.
