KB12624 - How to enable embedded messages

Environment

  • BlackBerry® smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP3 to SP 6 for Novell® GroupWise®
  • SDR117007

Overview

When an email message is forwarded as an attachment by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to the BlackBerry smartphone, the email message may include an unrelated embedded object (for example, an embedded email message from the Novell GroupWise server). When the same email message is delivered to the BlackBerry smartphone user’s email application, the message includes only the correct attachments. This issue does not occur if the message is forwarded as text and not as an attachment.
In BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 Service Pack 3, a registry value is added that, by default, prevents the forwarding of embedded email messages. If an email message that includes an embedded object is forwarded to a BlackBerry smartphone by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server removes the embedded text from the email message and replaces it with the following note:
Embedded message text insertion is disabled. Users can read any text that was added before the message was forwarded, but they cannot read the original text of the message.

Resolution

If the BlackBerry smartphone users in an organization require the ability to forward embedded messages, and the organization accepts the risk that an email message might contain unrelated embedded content, the default registry value can be changed by performing the following steps:
Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
  1. On the computer which hosts the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, open the Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Agents.
  3. Create a new DWORD value called DisableEmbeddedMessages.
  4. Right-click the DisableEmbeddedMessages value, and click Modify.
  5. Set the value to 0 in hexadecimal format.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Close the Registry Editor.
  8. Restart the BlackBerry Controller service.
