KB18427 - How to control Facebook for BlackBerry 1.6 organizer data access

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server
  • Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones 1.6 MR1
  • SDR345700

Overview

Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 1.6 MR1 allows BlackBerry smartphone users to connect their friends' profile pictures, Facebook names, and company names to existing BlackBerry smartphone contacts in the Contacts application. Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones updates the caller ID pictures of your synchronized friends with their latest profile pictures.
To control this capability, the IT policy Disable Organizer Data Access for Social Networking Applications can be used. This IT policy is included in BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0 and can be imported to BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.0 if required. For more information and for instructions on how to import these new policy rules to BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.0, see KB15535.
If you are using BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0 or have imported the IT policies into BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.x (see KB15535), the following scenarios will occur.
Scenario 1
The BlackBerry smartphone is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that contains this IT policy, and the IT policy is set to False.
Result 1
The BlackBerry smartphone user will be able to configure Facebook integrations for the BlackBerry Message application, BlackBerry Calendar application, and the BlackBerry Contacts application.

Scenario 2
The BlackBerry smartphone is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that contains this IT policy, and the IT policy is set to True.

Result 2
The BlackBerry smartphone user will not be able to configure Facebook integrations for the BlackBerry Calendar application or the BlackBerry Contacts application. However, they will be able to control the BlackBerry Messages application.

Scenario 3
The BlackBerry smartphone is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that contains this IT policy, and the IT policy has not been configured.
Result 3
The BlackBerry smartphone user will not be able to configure Facebook integrations for the BlackBerry Calendar application or the BlackBerry Contacts application; however, they will be able to control the BlackBerry Messages application.

Scenario 4
The BlackBerry smartphone is activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that does not contain this IT policy.

Result 4
The BlackBerry smartphone user will not be able to configure Facebook integrations for the BlackBerry Calendar application or the BlackBerry Contacts application; however, they will be able to control the BlackBerry Messages application.

Scenario 5
The BlackBerry smartphone user is not activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Result 5
The BlackBerry smartphone user will be able to configure Facebook integrations for the BlackBerry Message application, the BlackBerry Calendar application, and the BlackBerry Contacts application.

Note: If the BlackBerry smartphone user was previously activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that contained this IT policy, and it was enabled or not configured, the ability to enable the BlackBerry Calendar application and the BlackBerry Contacts application integration will be available again after performing a security wipe. To perform a security wipe of the BlackBerry smartphone, see KB02318.
