Overview

In BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 and 5.0, the Hard Deletes Reconciliation feature can be enabled so that email messages are permanently deleted in Microsoft® Outlook® and they are removed from the email message list on the BlackBerry smartphone. This feature is disabled by default.
The support for hard deletes uses a Message State Database stored in the computer memory. This database is enabled by default even if the Hard Deletes Reconciliation feature is disabled. By default, the last 100 email messages are tracked for hard delete support in the Message State Database however this number can be changed.
The Message State Database may be reset so that email messages redirected to a BlackBerry smartphone during a previous BlackBerry Enterprise Server session will not be deleted, even if they are hard deleted in the BlackBerry smartphone user's mailbox. Any of the following actions will reset the Message State Database:

• Either of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Professional Software are restarted.
• The BlackBerry smartphone user is moved to another BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Professional Software.
• The BlackBerry smartphone user's mailbox is moved to another Microsoft® Exchange Server.
• The BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrator sends a Reload User command from BlackBerry Manager.

The requirements to enable Hard Deletes Reconciliation are listed in the following table:

BlackBerry Device Software for BlackBerry smartphones based on C++	Version 2.6 or later

To enable Hard Deletes Reconciliation
If using BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1, complete the following steps:

1. Open BlackBerry Manager.
2. In the Explorer view, click Server.
3. On the Server Configuration tab, click Edit Properties, then click Messaging.
4. For the Hard Deletes Reconciliation option, choose True from the drop-down menu.
5. Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services. Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.

If using BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0, complete the following steps:

1. Open the BlackBerry Administration Service web page (BAS).
2. Enter your credentials to login.
3. On the left side, select BlackBerry Solution topology.
4. Select Component view.
5. Select the plus sign next to Email.
6. Click your <servername>.
7. Click the Messaging tab.
8. Click Edit instance.
9. Set Hard deletes reconciliation to True.

If using BlackBerry Professional Software, complete the following steps:

1. Open the BlackBerry Manager.
2. Select the Home tab.
3. Click Edit Server Properties.
4. Select Messaging.
5. Set Hard Deletes Reconciliation to True.

To change the number of tracked messages

1. Open BlackBerry Manager.
2. In the Explorer view, click Server.
3. On the Server Configuration tab, click Edit Properties, then click Messaging.
4. In the Performance section, change the value of the Message State Database Size field to the number of messages you want to track for hard delete support (the maximum is 1000).
5. Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services. Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.

Curious, if you set this to true, but the user still has Delete on Handheld only, will it still delete from there Outlook mailbox?

no it won't.

Hard Deletes are for when something is deleted from the mailbox and then proper reconciliation happens to the handheld.

I don't get what difference that has with the two-way delete that is set on the device?

Does that not also delete any emails off the device if they have been removed from exchange.

Hard Deleting a message is not the same as Deleting a message.
When you Delete a message, it's placed in the Deleted Items folder in the mailbox. This is what BES typically uses to reconcile the deletion to the handheld.

When you Hard Delete a message, it's NOT placed in the Deleted Items folder in the mailbox. It's simply gone.
In order for that message deletion to be reconciled to the handheld, 'Hard Delete Reconciliation' must be enabled on the BES.
