KB18163 - Microsoft SQL Server account requirements to add users to BB Manager
KB18163 - Microsoft SQL Server account requirements to add users to BlackBerry Manager
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.1 and later
- Microsoft® SQL Server® 2000 and 2005
Overview
BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrators want to provide limited Microsoft SQL Server privileges to accounts used to administer the BlackBerry Enterprise Server through BlackBerry Manager. If those privileges are insufficient, administrators will experience issues adding additional users to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server with limited access accounts.
Cause
In order to create additional users in BlackBerry Manager, the account must have sufficient privileges on the host Microsoft SQL Server system to add new Microsoft SQL Server user accounts. BlackBerry Manager accounts are the same as Microsoft SQL Server users. Logging into BlackBerry Manager is done through Microsoft SQL Server user accounts.
An account used to log in to the BlackBerry Manager and subsequently used to create an additional BlackBerry Manager administrative role account, must have Microsoft SQL Server System Administrator privileges to create the secondary accounts.
Resolution
Ensure at least one account used to administer the BlackBerry Enterprise Server has Microsoft SQL Server System Administrator privileges. Lesser privileges will prevent adding additional users successfully.
Workaround
If an administrator wishes to run the BlackBerry Enterprise Server accounts with less than Microsoft SQL Server privileges, the minimum level of Microsoft SQL Server privileges are required.
Any time accounts need to be created, the BlackBerry Manager Microsoft SQL Server account used must be temporarily promoted to Microsoft SQL Server System Administrator privileges during the creation and manipulation of accounts.
Note: For more information, see KB05201. While this article provides the access levels for a Microsoft SQL Server to run, Microsoft SQL Server System Administrator access is required to create new accounts.
