Default KB16118 - Turn on global catalog referrals in a Microsoft Exchange 2007 environment

KB16118 - Turn on global catalog referrals in a Microsoft Exchange 2007 environment

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.1 to 5.0
  • Microsoft® Exchange 2007
  • SDR196895
  • SDR197522

Overview

To turn on global catalog referrals in a Microsoft Exchange 2007 environment, complete the following steps on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. These steps are only necessary when the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account mailbox resides on a Microsoft Exchange 2007 mail server. In a mixed environment where the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account mailbox resides on a Microsoft Exchange 2003 server, these steps are not required. Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
  1. Log on to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account.
  2. Back up HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\
  3. Delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\ registry key to remove all existing profiles from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  4. Create a new Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile using the BlackBerry Server tab of the BlackBerry Server Configuration Panel.
  5. Edit the BlackBerry Enterprise Server MAPI profile within the registry to include the following: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\BlackBerryServer\13dbb0c8aa05101a9bb000aa002fc45a\

    Type: REG_BINARY

    Name: 00036619

    Value: 09 00 00 00
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\BlackBerryServer\13dbb0c8aa05101a9bb000aa002fc45a\

    Type: REG_BINARY

    Name: 00036606

    Value: 00 40 00 00
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\BlackBerryServer\13dbb0c8aa05101a9bb000aa002fc45a\

    Type: REG_BINARY

    Name: 00036604

    Value: 04 00 00 00
  6. Restart the BlackBerry Dispatcher, the BlackBerry Controller, and the BlackBerry Router. Note: Email message flow will be interrupted until the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services are restarted.

Additional Information

After completing the steps in the Overview section, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server handles global catalog outages better by connecting to a different global catalog. The log files may display errors and there may be a temporary loss of email messaging on BlackBerry smartphones while the BlackBerry Enterprise Server switches to the new global catalog.
A MAPI program may not obtain a referral server when the global catalog server that the MAPI program points to is shut down. For more information, visit the Microsoft Support Knowledge Base and search for "
A MAPI program may not obtain a referral server when the global catalog server to which the MAPI program points is shut down".

Note that while the registy change is always required, the Hotfix specified by the knowledge base is required only if the Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2 System Management tools are installed on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. If the MAPI 1.2.1 client is installed, the hotfix is already included and only the registry change needs to be made.

FYI, despite this not applying to those of us using Exchange 2003, if you decide to use MAPI/CDO 1.2.1 instead of ESM 2003 SP2, then you'll need to run the registry edit found in the Microsoft KB article. This information is included in the 'Additional Information' section. I believe it warrants its own KB article, but I digress. Nevertheless, I had the issues with not being able to send or reply from my BES 5.0 test servers due to it having an 'invalid address'.
