Default KB18174 - BlackBerry Administration Service user interface is not accessible ...

KB18174 - BlackBerry Administration Service user interface is not accessible due to TCP/IP and named pipes protocols not being enabled on the Microsoft SQL Server

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 5.0
  • BlackBerry Administration Service
  • SDR333478

Overview

When the BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0 installation completes, you may not be able to access the BlackBerry Administration Service user interface.

Cause

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and named pipes have not been enabled on the Microsoft® SQL Server® as communication protocols. This problem occurs when the BlackBerry Administration Service is installed locally with other BlackBerry Enterprise Server components. The BlackBerry Administration Service - Application Server service will start initially but stop after a few minutes.
If you are experiencing this issue, the BAS-AS log will show a log line similar to the following:

org.jboss.resource.JBossResourceException: Could not create connection; - nested throwable: (com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The server blackberry is not configured to listen with TCP/IP.)

Resolution

Enabling TCP/IP and Named Pipes as supported protocols on your Microsoft SQL Server that will allow the BlackBerry Administration Service Application Server service to start and continue running. This will in turn make the BlackBerry Administration Service Web Console accessible.
To enable these protocols, perform the following steps:
For Microsoft SQL Server 2005

  1. Open Microsoft SQL Configuration Manager, click Start > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration.
  2. Select the Microsoft SQL Server instance that contains the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
  3. For each TCP/IP and named pipes network protocol, double-click the protocol, change the Enabled field to Yes, and then click OK. The result is shown in the screen shot below.
  4. In Windows® Services, right-click each of the Microsoft SQL Services, and then select Restart.
  5. In Windows Services, restart the BlackBerry Administration Service - Application Server.

For Microsoft SQL Server 2000/MSDE

  1. Go to Start > Run and then type svrnetcn.exe.
  2. Click OK.
  3. From the drop-down on the General tab, locate the Microsoft SQL Server instance the BlackBerry Configuration Database is running on.
  4. From the Disabled Protocols column, select TCP/IP and Named Pipes.
  5. Click the Enable >> button to move these protocols to the Enabled Protocols column as shown in the screen shot below.
  6. From Windows Services, restart the Microsoft SQL Server service.
  7. From Windows Services, restart the BlackBerry Administration Service - Application Server.
