KB17023 - Recommendations for managing network activity for wireless BlackBerry Device Software upgrades
Environment
* BlackBerry® Device Software
* BlackBerry® Enterprise Server
Overview
When deploying wireless BlackBerry Device Software upgrades, to conserve usage of the wireless network you may want to deploy the upgrades in a prompted or staged method. The following are some recommendations:
1. When sending out the upgrade notice, include the option to download using non-wide area network (WAN) (non-cellular) transport protocols.
* Where possible, specify the use of Wi-Fi® and tethered protocols.
* If possible, avoid specifying WAN (cellular) based transports during peak hours of network activity.
2. Where possible, avoid specifying WAN-based transport when an upgrade notice has to be sent during peak hours.
* Enable WAN transports during non-peak hours and resend upgrade requests to BlackBerry smartphones.
3. Avoid specifying upgrades as mandatory unless it is absolutely critical.
* Making an upgrade mandatory causes the download to execute immediately for all target BlackBerry smartphones.
4. Stagger the number of upgrade requests for mandatory upgrades.
* Limit the number of upgrade requests for mandatory upgrades to a certain amount per day.
* Spread out sending upgrade requests over a period of days until all target BlackBerry smartphones are upgraded.
