KB13242 - How to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on Small Business Server
KB13242 - How to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on a Windows Small Business Server
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 and 4.1
- Microsoft® SQL Server® Desktop Engine (MSDE)
- Windows® Small Business Server
Overview
When installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on a Windows Small Business Server, the following tasks must be performed:
Task 1: Create a new service account specifically for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server
- Create a new Microsoft Active Directory® user account with a mailbox.
- Apply the permissions defined in KB02276.
Note: The Windows Small Business Server is a domain controller, therefore apply those permissions that are specified for a domain controller.
Task 2: Configure the database engine
In many cases, named instances of MSDE will be installed on a Windows Small Business Server. When the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation detects that a named instance of MSDE is present, a default or named instance of MSDE will not be installed automatically.
The steps to manually install a new named instance of MSDE can be found in KB11232. Step (1e) of this article suggests restarting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server; however, this can be avoided by manually starting the MSSQLSERVER$BlackBerry service.
Task 3: Install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software
- Log in using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account (for example, BESAdmin.)
- Extract the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software installation package.
- Run setup.exe.
- When prompted for the database server details, specify a remote Microsoft SQL Server.
- In the server name, type the name in the following format:
<server name>\<instance name>
If a new named instance was created, as outlined in Task 2, <instance name> would be BlackBerry.
Note: For further instructions, see the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange: Installation Guide.
Additional Information
If the permissions for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account (BESAdmin) have been assigned correctly, but BlackBerry smartphone users are unable to send or receive email messages, this might be the result of a known issue with Microsoft Small Business Server (SDR43757). This can be verified by launching Task Manager and checking, under the Process tab, if one or more BlackBerryAgent.exe processes are running. If the BlackBerryAgent.exe is not running, please contact your wireless service provider.
