Default KB03804 - What is wireless PIM synchronization

KB03804 - What is wireless PIM synchronization

Environment

  • BlackBerry® devices
  • BlackBerry® Device Software 2.7 and 4.0
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0
  • Microsoft® Exchange
  • IBM® Lotus® Domino®
  • Novell® GroupWise®

Overview

Background
Wireless personal information management (PIM) synchronization uses the Slow Sync protocol so that BlackBerry device users on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server can wirelessly synchronize their PIM databases with their computer mail application. The Slow Sync protocol provides two-way wireless synchronization of the Address Book, MemoPad, and Tasks applications. The Calendar also synchronizes wirelessly using the Compressed iCal (CICAL) protocol.
The Slow Sync protocol is also used to synchronize email settings and filters, and provides wireless backups. The benefit of wireless synchronization is that it eliminates the requirement for connecting your BlackBerry device to your computer and synchronizing through the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager.
For more information about PIM Sync configurations and options, see “Managing messaging and PIM” in your BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.0 Administration Guide.
BlackBerry device users
To turn on or off wireless PIM synchronization on the BlackBerry device, complete the following steps:
  1. Open the application (Address Book, MemoPad, or Tasks).
  2. Display the menu and click Options.
  3. To turn on wireless synchronization, set the Wireless Sync field to Yes. The default is Yes. To turn off wireless synchronization, set the Wireless Sync field to No.
  4. Display the menu and click Save.
A BlackBerry device user can still synchronize with Intellisync® by disabling wireless PIM synchronization on the BlackBerry device. For information about using Intellisync to synchronize with a wired connection, see KB03315.
When a BlackBerry device user has wireless PIM synchronization enabled, a slow synchronization is initially performed between the BlackBerry device and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to fully synchronize both sides. Once the initial slow synchronization is completed, only incremental changes are synchronized bi-directionally between the BlackBerry device and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Administrator server and user PIM settings
BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrators can manage the following PIM synchronization settings at both the database (all servers) and the BlackBerry device user level:
  • Synchronization Type
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Global Field Mappings
To display the BlackBerry Manager Properties window (see example image below), right-click on the BlackBerry Manager root icon in BlackBerry Manager and select Properties. Here you can specify PIM sync settings at the database level.
To display the User Properties window (see example image below), right-click on a BlackBerry device user in BlackBerry Manager and select Properties. Here you can specify PIM sync settings for groups or individual BlackBerry device users.
For example, the administrator can disable wireless Memo synchronization for one BlackBerry device user, enable Address Book synchronization for another BlackBerry device user, or disable all PIM synchronizations for a group of BlackBerry device users.
BlackBerry device users that require specific field mappings must have their settings specified by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrator at the individual BlackBerry device user level. BlackBerry device users that want to control their own field mappings and settings can do so by disabling wireless PIM synchronization and using the Intellisync utility in BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
IT policies When you right-click on a server in BlackBerry Manager and select IT Policy, a list of configured IT policies appears.
Administrators can enable or disable wireless PIM synchronization settings for all BlackBerry device users or groups of BlackBerry device users by editing IT policies. Administrators also have the option to control whether or not PIM synchronization functionality is available for a given BlackBerry device user or group of BlackBerry device users via the IT policy at the individual component level (Calendar, Address Book, MemoPad, and Tasks).
