KB03315 - Perform a wired organizer data synchronization and database backup
KB03315 - Perform a wired organizer data synchronization and database backup
Environment
- BlackBerry® Desktop Software 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3
- BlackBerry® Device Software 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.0 for Microsoft® Exchange
- SDR24366
Background
By changing the BlackBerry smartphone settings, BlackBerry smartphone users can synchronize and back up organizer data with a wired connection through BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. When the BlackBerry smartphone is configured correctly, organizer data can be synchronized with Intellisync® and individual organizer database backups can be made by clicking the Advanced button in Backup and Restore. This allows BlackBerry smartphone users who pay for wireless data transfer to minimize the amount of data transferred wirelessly by using an existing Internet infrastructure. When synchronization is complete and the BlackBerry smartphone user disconnects the BlackBerry smartphone, wireless data transfer resumes.
Another advantage is that BlackBerry smartphone users can synchronize data using any computer that is connected to the Internet and has BlackBerry® Device Manager installed.
Overview
To configure the BlackBerry smartphone and the BlackBerry Desktop Manager for wired synchronization and database backup, complete the following tasks:
Task 1
To configure a BlackBerry smartphone for wired organizer data synchronization and database backup, complete the following steps:
- On the BlackBerry smartphone, open an organizer data application (for example, the Address Book).
- Open the menu and select Options.
- Change the Wireless Synchronization option to No.
- Open the menu and select Save.
- Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each organizer data application that you want to synchronize through a wired connection.
Note: If you have synchronized public and private folders through a wired connection, do not turn wireless synchronization on again. Doing so will result in both your public and private folders synchronizing to your personal mailbox store.
Task 2
To configure BlackBerry Desktop Manager for wired synchronization, complete the following steps:
- In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, double-click on Synchronize or Intellisync, whichever appears in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager window.
- Select the Configuration tab.
- Click Configure Synch.
- Select the application that you would like to synchronize, and select Choose.
- Select the program that you would like to synchronize with, and click Ok.
- When you have all of the applications that you wish to synchronize configured, click Ok.
- Click Synchronize now.
Note: You will see the options for import, export and synchronize in the same window where you choose the program with which to synchronize.
- If you want the BlackBerry smartphone and Microsoft® Outlook® to have the same data, select Synchronize.
- If you want the data in Microsoft Outlook to override the data on the BlackBerry smartphone, choose Import.
- If you want the data on the BlackBerry smartphone to override the data in Microsoft Outlook, choose Export.
Additional Information
When an organizer data application is configured for wireless synchronization, the organizer data application database is set to read-only and cannot be synchronized through a wired Intellisync® connection. If an organizer data application is configured for wireless synchronization and a wired synchronization is attempted, the following warning will appear: Intellisync is currently unavailable for:
because the application(s) is (are) configured for wireless synchronization. Desktop synchronization for the above application(s) will be disabled.
where is a list of PIM applications configured for wireless synchronization.
Wireless synchronization for the organizer data application must be turned off on the BlackBerry smartphone to synchronize with Intellisync through a wired connection.
