I have a customer who regularly uses WiFi to connect to the internet when abroad to send and receive e-mails to avoid expensive roaming charges.
What carrier is the home network? BlackBerry compresses email so drastically that you're unlikely to swell roamed data charges (unless there's a lot of web browsing and apps involved, but even then that's unlikely).

Don't get me wrong, I love using my BlackBerry on Wi-Fi for faster browsing and dealing with sending and receiving large attachments, but I'd never use it out of concern for data usage.
