The device has a firewall enabled by default, and connecting via Wi-Fi doesn't pose a risk like connecting a PC would.

No, and yes ... but I wouldn't encrypt either. Unless you plan on losing the device, a password really is enough. That said, I wouldn't keep sensitive data on the SD card without encrypting it however.
