A version of BES stays supported for about a year after a new release is available, and like Otto said, you may well see a service pack for 4.1 after 5.0 launches.
It's important here to define what 'supported' is. When RIM replace a version of BES and provide an End Of Life date, all that means is after that date there will be no further software development for that release. Technical support for that EOL version will continue, but any serious or non-obvious technical issues will be met with a "upgrade to the latest version of BES" response.
